INFERTILITY
As an acupuncturist with 20 years in practice, I often see women with recognised conditions that may lead to infertility, such as endometriosis, blocked fallopian tubes, polycystic ovaries, fibroids, premature ovarian failure, high FSH, and recurrent miscarriage. However, what I also encounter is women over the age of 35 with a diagnosis of "unexplained infertility," despite normal test results and scans. Whether or not the couple is considering assisted reproduction, such as IUI, IVF, or ICSI, acupuncture can greatly assist in achieving a successful pregnancy.

The goal of treatment is to optimize every aspect of the menstrual cycle for ovulation, conception, and pregnancy to occur. This includes regulating hormones to maintain a regular 28-30 day cycle with high-quality, fertile cervical mucus, painless ovulation at midcycle, no premenstrual symptoms, and painless, moderate flow of fresh red blood during menstruation. Improving the quality of fertile mucus, which nourishes and guides sperm to the egg, is also crucial. Furthermore, promoting an efficient menstruation is essential, as the menstrual bleeding reflects the quality of the uterine lining necessary for implantation.
Acupuncture can also improve egg development, promoting the integrity of the eggs released by increasing blood supply to developing follicles or providing increased nutritional support to the egg via the fluids that surround and nourish it. Additionally, acupuncture can encourage the movement of the egg/embryo along the tubes and promote implantation and a viable pregnancy.

Male infertility is increasingly common, with the man's sperm being the primary factor contributing to infertility. It is crucial to have a sperm test early on when trying to conceive to identify any problems. If a problem is detected, relevant dietary and lifestyle adjustments, appropriate supplements ,and acupuncture treatment can help.
Acupuncture can improve fertility problems with a course of treatment lasting at least three months. and frequency of once a week. IVF supporting acupuncture treatment ideally should be done at least 3 cycles prior to it. Frequency of acupuncture session will be similar to previously mentioned treatment plan. However, with onset of administering downregulation and trigger medications, some more frequent sessions are required as well as around time of embryo transfer.
